The Scania HPI (High Pressure Injection) system makes continual, precise adjustments to ensure optimal fuel delivery in all conditions. It is able to vary the volume and timing of injection, thus minimising fuel consumption and harmful emissions without restricting torque build-up.

PDE unit injectors deliver the right amount of fuel at the right instant – with precisely the right pressure. Combustion in each cylinder is individually controlled to minimise both fuel consumption and harmful emissions. As a driver, you’ll find that engine speeds are more stable when manoeuvring in heavy traffic or when crawling along in tight parking areas. Each unit injector has its own integral high-pressure pump, individually controlled at the point of injection. There is no need for a centralised high-pressure pump and a complex system of pipes to feed each injector. This, in turn, makes the system inherently more reliable than previous solutions. Should a malfunction occur, it will almost certainly be present in only one cylinder. This means that your bus or coach is very unlikely to be disabled. Functional testing, using built-in diagnostics, takes no more than a few seconds and can be completed by a Scania technician at the roadside, if necessary.source

At Scania, every engine is built with a singular focus on combustion efficiency

Each new engine starts with the creation of an optimised single cylinder unit. Variations in aspects of the design are evaluated and refined, leading to power outputs with the most desirable characteristics.

In the course of researching various single-cylinder engines of different displacements, it has become apparent that cubic capacity itself is a critical factor. Quite simply, the potential for optimisation – excellent fuel economy, low emissions and generous torque – is at its greatest when the physical dimensions of the bore and stroke are within certain critical limits. This has led to the development of the Scania modular combustion concept.

Although overall engine designs have evolved over decades, all Scania engines currently in production are based on this advanced concept. These engines have identical combustion chambers and also share components such as pushrods, valve gears, roller tappets and piston rings. This makes them not only efficient, but also exceedingly simple to maintain and repair.

Thanks to its high efficiency rating, the D7E has low emissions. The

exhaust gases are cleaned still further with the help of SCR (Selective

Catalytic Reduction) technology. With this method, an additive called

AdBlue is injected into the exhaust gases before they pass through an

SCR catalyst where the nitrogen oxides are transformed into harmless

nitrogen gas and water vapour. As a result, the emissions are so low

that the engine meets the EU’s Euro 4, Euro 5 (incentive) and EEV*

(Enhanced Environmentally friendly Vehicle) emissions classes. Since

the exhaust treatment takes place without affecting the engine’s combustion, this also means that fuel consumption is lower compared with Euro 3.

In the D7E, injection takes place using common rail technology. The

fuel is injected at high pressure through a single pipe (common rail).

The engine’s functions are controlled electronically with the help of

Volvo EMS 2 (Engine Management System), so pressure and timing

can be regulated with immense precision. As a result, combustion

can always be optimised to suit driving conditions, thus contributing

to excellent driveability. The engine management unit is linked to the

vehicle electronic system. This provides advanced scope for diagnosis

and fault-tracing.

Components And Oil System Dimensioned for Long Service Life

The cylinder block and cylinder head are made of cast iron, which results

in a strong yet lightweight unit. The engine’s moving parts are all built to

handle long-term stresses. The lubrication system in the D7E guarantees

effective lubrication and cooling of all the engine’s systems. The geardriven oil pump ensures oil flow under all operating conditions. A separate
