Buses with Hybrid Technology

Buslovers ~ Hybrid technology is getting more popular in the automotive world. Not only cars but also transit buses are now using hybrid technology to reduce carbon gas emission and lower energy usage on the road. Hybrid technology is a combination of a conventional combustion engine and electric system. For buses, hybrid engine used is commonly a diesel type of hybrid diesel.

The use of hybrid bus will reduce petroleum usage for the engine as well as reduce carbon gas that can cause the greenhouse effect. Hybrid buses are now used in many countries as public transit. You can find it in Europe, North America, Brazil, some part of Asia, and New Zealand.

Green Buses in the World

Global warming makes people keep finding a way to live green. Public transport bus is no exception for helping the earth be a better place. The fact is that the bus is a source of carbon gas emission. Therefore, people try to create green buses that can lower pollution and help reduce global warming.

Compressed natural gas is one option because natural gas will create less pollution to the air. The second option is bio-diesel because the fuel comes from renewable resources. Then, the popular option that is already used in many developed countries is a hybrid bus. Countries such as US, UK, Germany, Canada, and more are already used hybrid buses for transit bus.

Gillig Hybrid Buses

Buslovers – gillig hybrid buses, It is a sad tale: Local bus manufacturer is bought by Daimler, manufactures hybrid bus design that sells well as far away as San Francisco and New York City. But in the home market of Toronto, they don’t work well at all. The lead-acid batteries were supposed to last four years and are dying after 18 months, at a rate of 140 batteries per week. They are using only 10% less diesel fuel instead of the 20% to 30% saving that was promised. And they cost almost 50% more to purchase in the first place.

So what is the problem?

Orion in San Francisco via After Gutenberg. It may be the routes they put them on; In Toronto many crowded downtown routes have streetcars and subways, so the buses are used on long suburban routes, whereas hybrids work best in stop and go traffic. That is why they appear to be happy with them in New York, where they are getting the promised diesel savings.hybrid buses orion san francisco 243x300 Gillig Hybrid Buses

Nobody is happy about the fact that the City is still on the hook to buy another 130 hybrids, but these will be delivered with lithium-ion batteries. But after that, it is back to Daimler “clean diesel.” Globe and Mail

Perhaps they should consider bringing back the trolley buses that we had until they cancelled them in 1993. They ran up a primarily residential street a block away from our house and were dead silent, completely non-polluting (not including the pollution from the 30% of our electricity that comes from coal) and the equipment lasted forever. The overhead wires were ugly, but that is a small price to pay for quiet, dependable transport.

Buslovers The latest version of Volvo’s hybrid bus is about 37 percent more fuel-efficient than the corresponding diesel variant, the company says. That is far better than customers and Volvo Buses’ own experts expected just a few years ago.

When Volvo Buses started field testing hybrid buses in 2007, the company calculated on a fuel saving of about 25 percent in urban operations compared with the corresponding diesel bus. When the first commercially built hybrid buses were launched two years later, their fuel consumption was about 35 percent lower. Since then the fuel consumption of new hybrid buses has dropped even more, thanks not least to lower vehicle weight and electric drive for several auxiliary 300x199 HYBRID BUS MORE FUEL EFFICIENT THAN EXPECTED

“The fuel data from the 260 Volvo hybrids already in service throughout the world show that reality surpasses our calculations. At the same time we are continuing to develop the technology towards even better fuel efficiency and lower emissions,” says Edward Jobson, Environment Manager at Volvo Buses.

One of Luxemburg’s largest travel and transport companies, Sales-Lentz, took delivery of its first Volvo hybrid in 2009 and now runs a total of eleven hybrids, operating both in inner-city urban traffic and in rural areas. Additional two Volvo Hybrids will be delivered in September 2012. The company maintains thorough records of its operating costs and notes that its hybrid buses more than match expectations.

“The fuel consumption of our Volvo hybrids is an average of 25.7 litres/100 kilometres, which is a very good figure. At the same time, we’re making a positive impact on the environment, which is appreciated by drivers and passengers alike,” says Jos Sales, CEO of Sales Lentz.

The choice of gearchanging system also helps cut fuel consumption, according to Volvo: her hybrid bus is equipped with I-Shift, which results in far lower energy losses than with a conventional automatic transmission.

The latest version of Volvo’s hybrid bus weighs about 500 kg less than before. This means it can carry another seven passengers, raising the vehicle’s productivity by eight percent. This in turn means that 112 Volvo hybrid buses can carry as many passengers as 130 diesel buses can.

While continuing to optimise the hybrid technology in today’s buses, Volvo Buses is also testing a variety of additional solutions such as a plug-in hybrid, where the bus’s batteries are recharged via the main electrical grid. With this system, fuel savings of up to 60 percent are possible.

Since Volvo Buses started building hybrid buses in 2010, the company has sold more than 650 units to customers in 18 countries. This makes Volvo the leading supplier of hybrid buses in Europe. source :

Fuel Cell Hybrid Buses

Buslovers – The Proterra fuelcell bus is about to begin serving transit riders in Austin, Texas. Capital Metro and the University of Texas Center for Electromechanics (UT-CEM) are to launch a hydrogen hybrid bus into operations among the UT shuttles as a part of a yearlong demonstration to test and further refine fuel-cell technology for public transit.

Partners recently involved in the project held an event to celebrate the kickoff of the zero-emission bus into passenger service this month.
fuel cell hybrid powered 300x158 Fuel Cell Hybrid Buses The Austin demo represents the second phase of the project supported through the Federal Transit Administration’s (FTA) National Fuel Cell Bus Program and managed by the Center for Transportation and the Environment (CTE). The program aims to significantly improve fuel efficiency and reduce emissions among transit vehicles. The bus previously operated in Columbia, S.C.

The prototype bus, built by Proterra from the ground up as a zero-emission bus, has plug-in rechargeable batteries, a hydrogen fuel-cell system and an efficient all-electric drivetrain. Water vapor is the only emission. The bus will alternate among the Forty Acres and Intramural Fields routes.

The bus will be fueled daily at a state-of-the-art hydrogen fueling station on the J.J. Pickle Research Campus, the first of its kind in Texas. The fueling station allows for the on site generation, compression, storage and dispensing of hydrogen.

Data collection during the demonstration will be reported back to the FTA and the National Renewable Energy Laboratory for further analysis.

Volvo Hybrid

Sistem Tambahan Tenaga Listrik

Plug-in hybrid hemat hingga 60%
